“What is the worth of a single mortal life?”
Sir Merritt, the Reckoner of Vale, has spent longer than he remembers searching for the answer.
He walks the flowering reaches of the Veilgarden carrying a blade whose purpose is not conquest, but consequence. Before it is drawn, Merritt must reckon with the life before him—not its rank, its victories, its wealth, nor the monuments it might leave behind.
Only its weight upon the world.
For the garden does not measure a flower by the length of its bloom.
It remembers what the flower nourished while it lived.
A kindness offered when none was required. A hand extended into darkness. A life made gentler because another life briefly crossed its path. These are small things by the measure of kingdoms, yet the Veilgarden has never cared much for the arithmetic of kings.
And so Merritt hesitates.
Beneath the flowers and the pale celestial sky, the Reckoner considers the terrible responsibility carried within a raised blade. To take a life is to sever every kindness that life might yet have given.
Perhaps the worth of a mortal life cannot be calculated at all.
Perhaps it can only be witnessed.
